Windows Scripted Program Installations

If your network is running Windows NT 4 network or a non-ADS network, use scripting for mass installations of the EndNote Web program.

NOTE: The installer requires the MSI 3.0 runtime environment, which may not be installed under Windows 2000 (SP3). When installing under Windows 2000 (SP3), run the EndNoteWeb.EXE file first to ensure the MSI 3.0 runtime environment is installed, and then run the EndNoteWeb.MSI.

To install via a command line:

  1. First, run the installer: msiexec.exe EndNoteWeb.MSI TARGETDIR="<valid path>"
  2. Install EndNoteWeb.MSI from the target directory. See the examples below. Drive letters are examples and vary according to the specific system and/or network.

Example:
msiexec /i D:\MSI\EndNoteWeb.MSI INSTALLDIR= "C:\Program Files\EndNote Web"

To write a log file, use the “/l” switch described in the table that follows. The following example specifies installing EndNote Web on a computer using the EndNoteWeb.MSI file found on N:\EndNote Web\Program\” and writing a log file to C:\logs\ called endnotewebmsi.log using the verbose setting.

Example:
msiexec /i “N:\EndNote Web\Program\EndNoteWeb.MSI” INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\EndNote Web" /l*v! C:\logs\endnotewebmsi.log

If you need additional information, refer to Microsoft’s mass installation documentation and command line documentation, at http://www.microsoft.com.

Deploying the Windows EndNote Web Installer with Group Policy

If your network is running the Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 Server operating system and Active Directory Services (ADS), we recommend a Group Policy installation for the volume version of EndNote Web.

Before you begin:

    • Make sure all workstations are using MSI 3.0 or later. If needed, you can download an update from Microsoft.
    • Make sure the share that EndNote Web is being deployed from is published in Active Directory.
    • Make sure the computer account has permission to access to the share.

NOTE: This software has not been tested with the Windows Distributed Filing System (DFS).

Group Policy Installations:

  1. Open the Group Policy for the Domain or Organizational Unit (OU) you want to modify.
  2. Under “Computer Configuration,” expand “Software Settings” and click Software Installation.
  3. Right-click “Software Installation” and choose New>Package.
  4. Browse for the share from which EndNoteWeb.MSI will be deployed.
  5. In the Deploy Software dialog, you may choose either Assigned or Advanced if you wish to modify the advanced settings. See the appropriate Microsoft help file for help on configuring the advanced options. Once the Group Policy is updated and the clients are restarted, EndNote Web is installed upon boot.
