You can import and export references using the tab-delimited file format. To import references from other Thomson Reuters research software products, follow the instructions in Importing References from Thomson Reuters Research Software Products.

If possible, import individual files containing references of the same type. This will reduce the modifications needed to the tab-delimited file. You can import a file containing a mix of reference types but additional work is required.  Steps for each are provided below.

Formating a File for a Single Reference Type

1. Open the tab-delimited file in a text editor or word processor application.
2. For the first line of the file, add the default reference type. The default type should appear starting with an asterisk and with a return, such as *Journal Article¶.
3. For the second line of the file, type each reference type's field name separated by tabs. This should be ordered as references' fields appear in the file, such as Author->Title->Year->.

   

Formating a File for Mixed Reference Types

1. Open the tab-delimited file in a text editor or word processor application.
2. For the first line of the file, add Generic as the default reference type. The default type should appear starting with an asterisk and with a return, such as *Generic¶.
3. For the second line of the file, type each reference type's field name separated by tabs in the order that the actual references' fields appear in the file. The first field will be reference type followed by the remaining fields, such as Reference Type->Author->Title->Year. The field names must correlate to those used for the Generic reference type. For fields not included for Generic References, use any of the extra field names.
