Importing References

The process to import references into your library requires only a few steps. First, it’s important that the import file is in the proper format. To determine the appropriate format, refer to Import Formats for details. EndNote online provides hundreds of import filters for a variety of data sources, as well as the standard RefMan (RIS) and Tab-delimited formats.

Note: If the site provides direct export to EndNote, Reference Manager, or Procite, consider using the browser plug-ins' direct export support.

To import a file:

  1. Select the Collect tab, and then click the Import References link.
  2. For the File field, click the Browse button to find and select the file containing reference data.
  3. For the Import Option field, select the import option that matches the reference data format.
  4. See Import Option Favorites to customize this list.
  5. For the To field, select a group to assign to the imported references.
  6. Click the Import button.

Did You Know...

  • You can import references from other Clarivate Analytics products.
  • You cannot import a file with the extension *.enl directly into EndNote online. Use the Transfer feature to import references from EndNote to EndNote online.

Unsuccessful Import

A number of factors may account for an unsuccessful import operation. These include:

  • the number of references imported
  • the import filter
  • the data in individual references. For example, a reference with many authors in a list without consistent delimiters may not import correctly.

If an import is not successful, try:

  • reducing the number of references
  • selecting an alternative import filter
  • editing the data in individual references
